Our History

1922

Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. was organized on November 12, 1922, in Indianapolis, Indiana, by seven young educators: Mary Lou Allison Gardner Little, Dorothy Hanley Whiteside, Vivian White Marbury, Nannie Mae Gahn Johnson, Hattie Mae Annette Dulin Redford, Bessie Mae Downey Rhoades Martin and Cubena McClure.

1929

The group became an incorporated national collegiate sorority on December 30, 1929, when a charter was granted to Alpha chapter at Butler University.

A New Chapter Begins

1951

The Gamma Chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority was charted at North Carolina A&T State in 1951.

1976

Delta Sigma Sigma (DSS) Alumnae Chapter was chartered on April 24, 1976 by: Lois M. Barnes, Doris G. Brandon, Dorothy E. Helms, Ruby W. Jones, Ruth V. Whitwork, Meada G. Shipman, Sarah S. Howell, Ernestine M. Green, and Irma T. Bass and it was the first alumnae chapter organized in Greensboro, NC. The Chapter currently advises the Gamma Chapter at North Carolina A&T State University, the Nu Nu Chapter at Bennett College, and the Omicron Eta Chapter at University of North Carolina at Greensboro. The Chapter also currently houses a Sorority affiliate group, the Rhoer Club. 

1993

DSS charted the Nu Nu Chapter at Bennett College on September 25, 1993.

2020

DSS was recognized as a Ruby Chapter, a Membership Grant recipient, and awarded the Mary Lou Allison Loving Cup at the 78th Northeastern Regional Conference.   

2021

DSS reactivated the Nu Nu Chapter at Bennett College on March 7, 2021 and inducted its first Regional Undergraduate (Greensboro College).

2022

DSS reactivated the Omicron Eta Chapter at University of North Carolina at Greensboro on March 4, 2022.

Affiliates

RHOERS

The Rhoer Club, an affiliate of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc., was established during the sorority’s 14th Annual Boule on December 29, 1939.  Rhoers, young ladies aged 12 to 18, are organized on a local, regional, and national level.  Rhoers work to help other young people while they learn about their heritage and develop leadership skills. Sigma Gamma Rho is dedicated to helping Rhoers grow to be women of substance dedicated to service. 


The Rhoers annually participate in Special Olympics NC and host the Youth Symposium.
